Choosing a security certification path that matches the job you want
Map certifications to roles such as SOC analyst, penetration tester, cloud security engineer, and security manager, and decide what to take first based on job postings rather than hype.
Start from the role
Certifications are most useful when they match the work you want. Entry-level and general roles commonly list CompTIA Security+. SOC and detection roles value CySA+ and hands-on blue team certifications. Offensive roles look for practical exams such as eJPT, PNPT, and OSCP. Cloud roles look for provider security certifications, and management roles for CISSP or CISM, which also require years of experience.
- Generalist or entry: Security+
- SOC and detection: CySA+, practical blue team exams
- Penetration testing: eJPT, then PNPT or OSCP
- Cloud: AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud security certifications
- Management and governance: CISSP, CISM
Use job postings as data
Collect twenty postings for your target role in your region and count which certifications appear as required versus preferred. This often reveals that hiring managers in your market care about a different credential than online forums suggest, and it shows which skills appear alongside the certification.
Lab: build your certification map
Save twenty job postings for one target role. Record each certification mentioned and whether it is required or preferred, plus the top five technical skills. Total the counts and choose a first certification that appears often and fits your current level. Write down one practical skill you will build alongside it so your résumé shows both.
posting | role | required certs | preferred certs | top skills 01 | SOC analyst I | Security+ | CySA+ | SIEM queries, phishing triage, Windows logs 02 | SOC analyst | - | Security+, BTL1 | Splunk, EDR, incident tickets ... totals: Security+ 14 (9 required) | CySA+ 7 | practical blue team 5
Cost, prerequisites, and timing
Compare exam price, retake policy, renewal requirements, and experience prerequisites before committing. Many employers reimburse exams, and some vendors offer student or voucher discounts. Choose one certification at a time and finish it, rather than studying for several in parallel.
