A book chapter is not an objective id

A chapter number is the author’s division of a book. An objective id is a line in the objectives file. Finishing a chapter does not check off every id that sounds related. Write the chapter and the ids separately.

The chapter is the book

A study book numbers its chapters in the order the author chose. Chapter 4 might be titled with a word that also appears in an objectives domain. The number 4 in the book is not domain 4, and it is not each objective id inside a domain.

Reading the chapter is a study event. It is not a completed tracker.

Ids are checked one by one

The objectives file lists ids. A tracker marks an id when you have a reason tied to that id. A chapter can support several ids, or none, depending on what you actually did. You write the ids you mean.

If the chapter’s table of contents does not name an id, write “objective ids not mapped from this chapter.” Do not mark a domain complete from the chapter title.

What to write down

File the book, the chapter number, and the objective ids you are willing to point at. Leave the others unchecked. Do not let a shared word such as “operations” merge the chapter and the domain.

Lab: chapter 4 marked as a whole domain

A lab book’s chapter 4 is titled Operations. The objectives file’s domain 4 contains many ids, and none of them are written in the chapter heading. A draft checks off every domain 4 id because the chapter was read.

The note says chapter 4 was read. Objective ids mapped from that chapter: none yet. Domain 4 stays unchecked until each id is named. The shared word Operations is not the mapping.

Snippet
book chapter: 4, title Operations
read: yes
objective ids named in the chapter heading: none
domain 4 in the objectives file: many ids, still unchecked
write: the chapter was read
not: domain 4 is complete

Check yourself

1. You finished a chapter titled Operations. What have you recorded?

2. The chapter heading names no objective id. What do you check off?

3. When is it fair to mark one objective id complete from the reading?
