Reverse image search for verification: finding where a picture first appeared
Use several reverse image engines, crops, and keyframes to trace an image to its earliest source, detect recycled photos in breaking news, and document what you found.
Why verify images
During breaking events, old photos and video stills are routinely recirculated as new, and scam profiles reuse photos of real people. Reverse image search compares a picture against indexed images and returns visually similar matches with their pages, which often reveals an earlier date, a different place, or the original photographer.
Engines and techniques
Engines differ in coverage, so try more than one: Google Lens, Bing Visual Search, Yandex Images, and TinEye, which can sort results by oldest first. Crop to the distinctive part of the image, mirror it if it might have been flipped, and for video extract keyframes and search each one. InVID-WeVerify is a browser plugin that extracts keyframes and links to multiple engines.
- Search on at least two engines
- Crop to distinctive objects or landmarks
- Try a mirrored copy
- Extract video keyframes
- Sort by oldest where supported
Lab: trace a known image
Choose a widely shared news photo whose origin is documented, such as one from a fact-checking article. Search it on two engines, sort by oldest on TinEye, and record the earliest page you find with its date. Then crop to a single landmark and repeat. Compare your earliest result with the fact-check and note which engine and technique found it first.

Limits and care
No match does not prove an image is new or authentic, and an early match is evidence, not proof, of origin. Combine results with metadata, weather records, shadows, and the uploader’s history. When the subject is a private person, verify for a legitimate purpose and avoid amplifying their identity.
