Print order is not time order

Rows leave the script in loop order. That is not earliest-first unless the script says it sorted. Cite the order you can prove.

Loop order is the order of the print

A script that walks a file from top to bottom prints rows in that walk. The first line on the screen is the first line it printed. It is the earliest event only if the file was already in time order, or the script sorted, and the output says which.

Silence about sorting means you do not have a sort. Do not upgrade print order into time order to make the ticket read more cleanly.

Times are values on the rows

If each printed row carries a timestamp, you can compare those strings as data. The earliest among the printed rows is the earliest of those values, which may be the second or third line. That comparison is yours, and it covers only the rows in front of you.

Rows the script did not print are not in the order. Do not place them before or after the lines you have.

What to label

Label the list as print order. If you also sort the printed timestamps, label that second list as your sort of these rows. A reader should see that the script did not claim the sort.

Lab: 18:00 printed before 09:00

A lab script prints three rows and no sort line. The times, in print order, are 18:00Z, then 09:00Z, then 12:00Z, all on 2026-11-03. A draft says 18:00 happened first because it was the first line.

The note says print order starts at 18:00. Among these three printed times, 09:00 is the earliest value. The script did not say it sorted. Nothing is claimed about rows that were not printed.

Snippet
sort line: none
print order: 18:00Z, 09:00Z, 12:00Z
earliest printed value: 09:00Z
write: print order, and a separate comparison
not: 18:00 happened first

Diagram

What the first printed line is allowed to mean

First on the screen is first printed, not automatically first in time.

  • Print order

The order the script wrote the rows. Quote it as print order.

  • No sort line

You do not have a claim that the script sorted.

  • Your comparison

You may rank the timestamps that are actually on the page.

  • Unprinted rows

They are outside both orders. Do not insert them.

Check yourself

1. The first printed row says 18:00Z and the script printed no sort line. What is 18:00Z?

2. The next printed row says 09:00Z. What can you say about these two printed values?

3. Several matching lines were not printed. Where do they go in the time order?
