Cloud security certifications: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and vendor-neutral options

Compare provider security certifications and vendor-neutral options, the hands-on skills each expects, and how to practice them with free tiers and budget alerts.

The main options

Each major provider offers a security-focused certification: AWS Certified Security Specialty, Microsoft’s Azure Security Engineer Associate (AZ-500), and Google Cloud’s Professional Cloud Security Engineer. Vendor-neutral options include the Cloud Security Alliance’s CCSK and ISC2’s CCSP, which emphasize concepts and governance across providers.

  • Microsoft Azure Security Engineer Associate (AZ-500)
  • Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer
  • CSA CCSK (vendor-neutral knowledge)
  • ISC2 CCSP (vendor-neutral, experience required)

Common skill areas

Across providers you will need identity and access management with least privilege, logging and monitoring, network controls, data protection with key management, incident response in the cloud, and governance features such as organization policies. Choose the provider your target employers use.

Lab: a safe practice account

Create a personal free-tier or trial account, set a budget alert immediately, and enable multi-factor authentication on the root or global admin account. Then complete one exercise per skill area, such as creating a least-privilege role, turning on audit logging, and encrypting a storage bucket with a managed key. Delete resources after each session.

Snippet
# AWS example: budget guard and audit log first
aws budgets create-budget --account-id 111122223333 --budget file://budget-10usd.json --notifications-with-subscribers file://notify.json
aws cloudtrail create-trail --name lab-trail --s3-bucket-name lab-trail-111122223333 --is-multi-region-trail
aws cloudtrail start-logging --name lab-trail

Choosing between them

Provider certifications prove you can operate that platform securely and are strongest for hands-on engineering roles. Vendor-neutral certifications suit architects, auditors, and managers working across providers. Many people take one provider certification first and a neutral one later.
